Charlie Villanueva is a professional basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks. Charlie has alopecia universalis, a variation of alopecia areata. This results in hair loss on the scalp and/or elsewhere on the body. Over 6.6 million Americans have alopecia areata, totalis or universalis, including Villanueva. Although the condition isn't life-threatening, most cases like Villanueva's worsen over time, resulting in hair loss over the entire body. Charlie has spoken about how alopecia impacted his childhood and his life now. As a child, Charlie got bullied a lot in school, many kids didn't know what he was going through, Villanueva led his frustration into basketball, basically devoted all of his time into becoming a professional basketball player.

He has won awards for community outreach and slowly receiving recognition for his efforts. Charlie Villanueva has always been open about his struggle with alopecia and he has served as an advocate for the condition. Charlie is now working on a movie to bring more awareness to the alopecia community and his life career. As noted, alopecia is not a life-threatening condition but Charlie stated “It is life-threatening because, emotionally and mentally, it can screw you up with the bullying and not feeling confident and dealing with low-esteem. It definitely has its downside”. What we hope to achieve from this film is to educate people, create awareness, and to stop bullying.

It’s great to see Charlie Villanueva become so active in bringing awareness to those living with alopecia while providing everyone with a positive role model to look up to. At Unique Hair Concepts, we offer many exciting solutions for men's hair loss
