You’ve probably heard of Botox, a process where an individual has injections of a toxin called Botulinum to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the face. This is usually done regularly to relax facial muscles and temporarily remove wrinkles caused when we move those muscles.
But many of my clients in Westchester County have been asking me about hair Botox. Surely you can’t inject your hair to generate a more youthful glow?
Well… no, you can’t. Hair Botox doesn’t involve any needles, and it doesn’t involve the Botulinum used in traditional Botox treatments. The name is merely a term given to the process of using a deep conditioning hair treatment for better results.
So, in this post, I’m going to explain more about hair Botox, what you need to know about it, and whether it’s a good option if you’re suffering from hair loss, split ends, or other hair problems.
What Is Hair Botox?
Let’s begin with the basics, namely that hair Botox is a deep conditioning treatment for your hair. While Botulinum isn’t involved, and nor are any so-called injectables, the treatment does have the same result. It smooths your hair, typically using keratin to fill any damaged or thin areas on your strands of hair.
Here’s where we can see the similarity between traditional Botox treatments for the skin and hair Botox. In the case of using keratin treatments, your hair should look and feel smoother. So, if you were wondering – and worrying – about any sort of injectables for your scalp, there’s no need to. If you have conditioned your hair at any point (and no doubt you have), hair Botox works along much the same lines.
Is Hair Botox Good for Your Hair?
Yes, but of course, different people will see different results. A lot depends on what condition your hair was in to start with.
Hair Botox is intended for those with troublesome hair. So, if you have split ends, fine hair, or your hair is showing any kind of damage (heat damage, for example), it might be worth checking out.
The good thing is that when you use hair Botox, you should see an immediate change to how your hair looked prior to treatment.
Can You Do a Hair Botox Treatment at Home?
There are some treatments you can purchase for home use, but it is best to visit a hair stylist to have it done properly. They’ll know which products get the best results, and of course, you can talk through the process with them before going for it. Since the procedure is still relatively new, you won’t find it available at every hair salon. It’s certainly safer and more relaxing to take the salon route for hair Botox.
What Happens During the Hair Botox Process?
Shampoo is used first, to make sure your hair is clean and to remove all products from your hair. The conditioning treatment is then applied and left on for some time. Depending on the product used for the hair Botox process, this could be anywhere from 10 minutes to 90 minutes.
Some products are rinsed off as normal conditioner would be, whereas others are designed to be left on. The hair is then dried and styled as usual. You should notice a difference – your hair should feel smoother, and if you suffer from split ends, these should be far less noticeable.
How Long Does Hair Botox Last For?
You may know that skin Botox is only temporary, lasting for a few months at most. The same applies for hair Botox. However, you can reapply the treatment every few months as required, depending on the results.
If you do suffer with frizzy hair and split ends, you should notice a marked improvement when using this treatment. It won’t cause any hair loss, but it can make your hair look and feel far better. However, if you have fine, thinning hair or hair loss, it is important that you consult with a hair expert to learn if this is the correct treatment for your hair.
